Our Evanston farmers’ market has joined the ranks of markets that accept food stamps. This year, across Illinois, about 50 total farmers’ markets participate in the food stamp program. This is nearly double the amount that participated in 2010. You can read the full coverage in the Daily Northwestern. It is a simple, mutually beneficial exchange. Evanston Link card holders receive 50 cents back on every dollar they spend, enabling them to buy up to $10 more vegetables. And the farmers at the market benefit from the larger crowds. Wild Roots commends the market on this program because it supports the mission of getting every person in touch with fresh, real food.
