Edible flowers

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all having a wonderful day.  Today I’d like to inform you all about a few edible flowers.   As this is not my area of study, I am depending exclusively on Lord Google.  However, in my research I came across some very different information.  I found a list of commonly listed edible flowers.  However, if you are planning to eat those colorful flowers from your garden, do your research first.  You do not want to be eating poisonous flowers!  Be sure that the species you pick is edible.  Be sure that no pesticides and herbicides have been sprayed on or around your flowers.  If you aren’t sure, ask someone before eating it.

Note:  Do not eat flowers solely based on the fact that deer/rabbits eat it.  Some plants are part poisonous, be sure you eat only the safe part (avoid rhubarb leaves).  Cooking flowers will not remove toxins.

After that lovely introduction, here are the flowers commonly accepted to be safe for human consumption.  (From SheKnows.com, slightly edited by me)

  • Okra (has pretty red or yellow flowers with a mild sweet flavor)
  • Hollyhock (variable colors with a slightly bitterness)
  • Chive (flowers are lavender or white, with a strong onion flavor)
  • Dill (has yellow flowers that taste like dill)
  • English chamomile (these white and yellow flowers taste like apple)
  • Chervil (white flowers with a parsley-like flavor with hint of citrus and tarragon)
  • Mustard (yellow orange flowers that taste hot like mustard)
  • Squash/pumpkin blossoms (orange and yellow flowers with a raw squash flavor)
  • Dianthus (pink, white, and red flowers that taste spicy like cloves)
  • Rocket/Arugula (white flowers with a nutty, smoky taste)
  • Scented geranium (white, red, pink and purple flowers with a variety of flavors)
  • Dandelion (yellow flowers with a bitter flavor)
  • Nasturtium (varies in color with a watercress and peppery flavor)
  • Pansy (variety of colors with a sweet flavor)
  • Violets (violet, pink or white with a sweet flavor)

Nasturtiums are an absolute favorite among chefs.  They add color and spice and are very safe.  Give those flowers (and leaves) a try!

    i grow Nasturtium im my garden aganst a sun soaked wall along with covering an eyesore they are also amazing put in with a salad,leaves and flowers, but i also like to pick a range of flowers and make a nice , all be it small, flower salad. This gets a great response at dinner parties as a starter with some other small finger foods from the garden.
